Cute Overload

I am not embarrassed to say that I visit this site everyday, usually multiple times. So I feel fairly comfortable with the design. Cute Overload is a daily blog that posts pictures of cute animals. The author updates several times and day and writes little commentary about each picture. The pictures are all tagged and archived. Allow me to recommend the Cute or Sad? category.

Intended Audience
  • people who like cute animals
  • people who obsess over their pets
  • people who like to waste time at work by visiting silly websites
  • people who are fairly tech- and Internet-savvy (she posts embedded videos and links that would not run well on a slow computer with a slow connection, also she uses instant message and Internet jargon)
Usefulness of content
  • in the grand scheme, only useful for making you smile
Consistency of design
  • each page is exactly the same, so it is very consistent
  • she has changed the layout of the site once since I have been visiting it (in the past year or so)
  • standard blog style (content in middle column, ads on the left, archive and other stuff on the right)
Ease of navigation
  • it is quite simple to navigate because the site is simple in idea, current content is shown on the main page, after a day or two the pictures are sent to their respective archives by category (Bunnies, Cute or Sad?, I shall leeck you, etc.)
  • if you are using a slow connection, it can be frustrating because all the pictures for each category have to load since they are on the same page
Overall, I think the design is simple, perhaps too simple for how big its getting. But the idea is perfect for what the site is trying to do. Post new pictures everyday in a showcase and archive them into funny categories once they retire from the front page.

If I were managing the site, I may look into organizing the archives into multiple pages or use thumbnails so the full pictures don't take so long to load.
