The American Museum of Natural History

www.amnh.org

Intended audience: Anyone planning a visit to the museum, anyone interested in natural history, parents or teachers trying to get their kids interested in science.

Usefulness of content: The site definitely has all the information that anyone planning to visit the museum would need: hours, location, prices, detailed information about what’s on exhibit, etc. The “science” link at the top directs the reader to scientific news, which is divided into various categories (anthropology, paleontology, etc.). The site also has a lot of wonderful resources for parents, teachers, and kids.

Consistency of design: The banner and links at the top of the page remain constant throughout the site, and the same color scheme is used on most pages. My main problem with the design is that there’s just too much on every page. The homepage is too busy, and a lot of the information can be found through multiple links, which makes the site feel messy.

Ease of navigation: This site is not terribly easy to navigate. If you’ve come to the site for one particular piece of information, and that’s all you need, then it’s easy enough. But if you want to research more than one thing, from different sections of the website, then you’re going to have a harder time. The links up top are consistent, but these are very broad categories, and the information isn’t always organized the way most people would expect it to be. And there are so many links that contain the same information that it is hard to know whether you’ve seen everything you need to.
