Video in My Backyard

This week I'm talking about VIMBY. I like the idea of this website a lot. Amateur film makers and photographers from around the country are going out into their communities and documenting the interesting people and happenings in their town. The videos for Austin include a video about the Beauty Bar, one about Flip Happy Crepes, and loads of photos from shows and events.

Intended Audience

Young people around the country who are interested in connecting with other folks who have similar interests in their own towns or other places.

Usefulness of Content

"Useful" might be a strong word here. This site is good at showing pictures of cool kids doing cool stuff. It is not really a fair profiling of a town or representative of reality. They even say that they hand pick the photos and the video content is chosen ahead of time. But if you just want to get a feel for Flip Happy Crepes or other towns' equivalent of that, this is a good place to start.

Consistency of Design

The page design is consistent. All the stylistic features are of a faux-spray paint theme. The dynamic content is all on the left and the menu bar is on the top.

Navigation

It is pretty easy to get around this site. The menu bar on the right is pretty useless. The menu at the top is clear and once you click around for a while, you see that the map is not interactive but they provide other ways of searching and browsing.

A cool place to visit and a good opportunity for a lot of folks to make their mark. Also a good place to start if you are researching other cities' nightlife.
