National Geographic Kids

http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/

Intended Audience: This is a fun, educational site geared for elementary students. Children will enjoy the variety of activities such as high interest stories, videos, games, printouts and more. Educators may also use the site to reinforce objectives taught in the classroom. Librarians preparing activities and programs for children can get great pictures and fun facts for story time.

Usefulness of Content: Kids National Geographic is rich with interesting content. Click on the animals tab and you find a fun story about a really cool animal. In additional to the story, the site provides a map showing where in the world the animals live, a video showing the animal in their natural habitat and the kids can easily print out a picture of the animal or send an e-card which features the animal to friends. National Geographic also provides children with a platform for evaluating the content and instant messaging with friends.

Consistency of Design: The colorful design is consistent throughout the site. The color scheme stays basically the same on each page. Also each page has the same header and page layout.

Ease of Navigation: Children will find navigation throughout the site easy. Tabs at the top of each page are clear making it easy to travel through the site. A tab marked 'Home' makes returning to the homepage easy. Watching videos on the site opens the video in a separate window. When the children close the window by clicking 'X', they are returned to the page they were previously viewing.
