www.killrockstars.com

Alright, since all of my previous postings have kind of been lovefests, I though I would change things up a bit and talk about a website I have some problems with.

Target Audience: Kill Rock Stars is, as its name might suggest, a fiercly independent music label. Their biggest band right now would probably have to be The Decemberists (though they've recently moved to Capitol), but they've been the home to such artists as Sleater-Kinney and Elliott Smith as well. Fans of independent music would find the Kill Rock Stars website to be a great resource (and place to shop!), except for the fact that the design is all over the place, and can take some getting used to.

Usefulness of Content: Very useful, depending of course on how interested you are in the music Kill Rock Stars is putting out. Artists are given their own page, with brief descriptions and links to bands who have their own websites. Tour dates for bands on the road are provided, and free mp3s and music videos are provided on the downloads page. The store has lps, cds, shirts, and posters... all the items you would expect. There's also some random stuff thrown around the site that's pretty cool, like a gig poster gallery. You have to look, though.

Consistency of Design: Um... nonexistent? Every page is different, and odd background/text color combinations abound. The navigation banner with links to the different areas of the site does provide a nice anchor, and can help ground new visitors. Maybe they're going for a DIY sort of aesthetic, what with the independent angle and all? In any case, some areas of the site aren't pretty.

Ease of Navigation: As mentioned, the navigation bar at the top of the site does make getting around pretty painless. The store is very sparse, however, and can take some getting used to if you've been weaned away from the bare bones approach by larger online retailers.
